Michael Jackson

Today in HIStory

By on October 24, 2011

Today in HIStory: “Bad” hits #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart.

Released in September in 1987, Bad is a single in the album of the same name, written and recorded By Michael Jackson. “Bad” charted within the top ten, at number eight, on the Billboard Hot 100 on October 10, 1987 and stayed at number one on October 24, 1987. “Bad” stayed at the top position for two consecutive weeks.

Davitt Sigerson, writer for Rolling Stone magazine, commented on the track’s lyrical content while reviewing Bad, “When Jackson declares that ‘the whole world has to answer right now,’ he is not boasting but making a statement of fact regarding his extraordinary stardom. If anything, he is scorning the self-coronation of lesser funk royals and inviting his fickle public to spurn him if it dare.”

Jackson explained ‘Bad’ is a song about the street. It’s about this kid from a bad neighborhood who gets to go away to a private school. He comes back to the old neighborhood when he’s on a break from school and the kids from the neighborhood start giving him trouble. He sings, ‘I’m bad, you’re bad, who’s bad, who’s the best?’ He’s saying when you’re strong and good, then you’re bad.

True, the full music video depicted the story of Daryl with Michael, Wesley Snipes included but knowing Michael Jackson’s upbringing and his beliefs, his ending words struck me the most.

Freddie Mercury | Michael Jackson | Music Monday

There must be more to life than this

By on October 22, 2011

This is an unreleased collaboration between Freddie Mercury and Michael Jackson sometime between 1981-1983. There are other songs that the two recorded together but were all unreleased.

As a usual Michael Jackson song, this is full of feelings about the human condition. There are no other records pertaining to who wrote the song, none that I found googling but this is certainly one of the best songs I like coming from two great musicians.

Only Hope (Piano played by ear)

By on October 16, 2011

“Respect!” I often read that as a comment on Youtube videos – those of really talented musicians and this video is one that I’d really comment that on.

I have a deep appreciation for those who can play the piano but deeper for those who can learn a music piece and can play it by ear.

According to wiki, “play by ear” can mean any of these: One, improvisation, the act of inventing all or part of a process as it is performed. Play by ear may also refer to an attempt in re-playing a song using a specific instrument without using any guidelines but the original song itself.

Two, learning music by ear, a term used to describe learning how to play a musical piece purely by listening to a rendition of the piece alone, without the aid of printed material.

I personally know one who can play by ear but haven’t heard of him for the longest time. I was always in awe hearing the guy play the guitar…he has a good voice to boot too! For a frustrated musician like me, I can only admire such talents from a distance.
